The union for Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre workers
Most recreation and arena workers across Canada are unionized. Over the past decade or so, private companies, like Recreation Excellence, R.G. Properties, Aramark and Leisure Recreation Group have been seeking to operate and sometimes own these community facilities for the purposes of making a profit.
When this profit motive is introdu
ced, pressure to reduce workers wages increases and working conditions, including health and safety and hours of work, deteriorate. R.G. Properties President & CEO Graham Lee told the media that he wants nothing to do with a union. We have heard differently from the new workers at this privately run facility.
The former Memorial Arena was operated and maintained by union members including 200 CUPE Local 50 members. When it was demolished all workers lost their arena jobs. We are here to support your efforts to organize the new facility.
